Audiovisual Collections and Digital Initiative Department 2017 Summer Internship

Radio Corporation of America (RCA) photographs is a collection that in addition to photographic prints contains 124,000 negatives. The negatives are degrading, brittle, or have vinegar syndrome. A card index has partially been converted to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. The goals of this project are to create a complete inventory of the collections holdings and assist in prioritizing future conservation treatment of the negatives based on the contents, research value and condition of each negative.

The Internship

This 2017 summer internship will focus on the preservation and inventorying of negatives in the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) collection. The tasks of this project are to:

  • Complete conversion of the card index inventory into Microsoft Excel.
  • Rehouse negatives into archival envelopes and boxes.
  • Identify and document the image content on the envelopes.
  • Determine the condition and preservation needs of each negative.
  • Document which items in the index are present in the collection, the format (e.g. photographic print or negative or both) and the condition.

The intern will work under the supervision of the Curator of Audiovisual and Digital Collections and very closely with the Library Conservator. Work may involve respiratory protection.
