Nemours/Alfred I. du Pont Hospital for Children Outreach (fourth Thursday monthly)

Description: Assist education staff in activities with children and adults in the inpatient activity room and the outpatient waiting room, engaging them with hands-on experiments, activities, and educational games. Background check is required.

Qualifications: Interest in working with children and parents in a sensitive, caring, and pleasant manner. Ability to pass a background check.

Requirements: Time commitment of one shift from 1:45 to 4:15 p.m.

Bike and Hike: On Wednesday evenings in July and August (see calendar for specific dates), enjoy biking or hiking Hagley’s three-mile loop from the Visitor Center to the Eleutherian Mills Residence.

Trail Safety Assistant

Description: Ensure hikers and bicyclists remain on paths and in public areas.

Qualifications: None.

Requirements: Time commitment one four-hour evening shift during July and August.

Kids Activities Volunteer

Description: Help families with crafts, games, and other activities.

Qualifications: Enjoy working with children and families.

Requirements: Time commitment one four-hour evening shift.

Car Show: Browse through more than 500 antique and restored cars that date from the early 1900s to the 1980s. The show features vehicle parades, motoring music, video and go-kart racing, and a food court:

Greeter

Description: Greet guests and direct them to the correct lines. Thank people for coming to the show as they leave.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy interacting with guests.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift. Able to stand for periods of time.

Membership Assistant

Descriptions: Greet visitors and help sell Hagley memberships. Hand out and write down the number of free wristbands for members.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing, and comfortable approaching guests.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift.

Admissions Wristband Assistant

Description: Assist guests with admission wristbands and pass out programs.

Qualifications: Helpful, friendly, and outgoing. Able to stand for periods of time.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift.

Activity Assistant

Description: Assist guests and families with activities, such as pedal car relays and video games.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy helping families with activities. Able to stand for periods of time.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift. .

Hagley Store Booth Assistant

Description: Assist store staff with bagging purchases and monitoring displays.

Qualifications: Friendly and outgoing. Able to stand for periods of time.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift.
 

Traffic/Parking Assistant

Description: Help guide guests into parking lot and to admissions tent. Volunteers will be provided with safety vests.

Qualifications: Friendly and outgoing. Able to stand for periods of time and walk on uneven grass surface.

Craft Fair: This premier marketplace brings talented artisans from the mid-Atlantic area to display and sell fine arts and crafts in wood, pottery, jewelry, fibers, metal, and other media. The fair will include an outdoor gourmet food market. Craft Fair Volunteer positions include General Admissions Assistant, Hagley Store Booth Assistant, Membership Assistant, Raffle Assistant, and Lunchtime Runner:

General Admissions Assistant

Description: Hand out programs and direct visitors.

Qualifications: Friendly and patient with people, able to speak clearly.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift for one day of the event.

Hagley Store Booth Assistant

Description: Bag purchases and monitor displays.

Qualifications: Interact well with people.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift for one day of the event.

Membership Assistant

Description: Promote and sell Hagley memberships

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy interacting with people.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift for one day of the event.

Raffle Attendant

Description: Monitor raffle and assist guests with questions.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy interacting with visitors.

Lunchtime Runner

Description: Take lunch orders and deliver lunches to vendors who cannot leave their booths.

Qualifications: Ability to take orders, make change, walk some distance, and handle steps.

Requirements: Time commitment of one three-hour shift for one day of event.

The Fireworks event is a members-only event consisting of picnics, music, fireworks, and fun in June. Volunteer positions include Floater, Wristband Monitor, Late Check-in Monitor, Raffle Booth Assistant, Hagley Store Booth Assistant, and Kid Central Activity Assistant:

Floater

Description: Assist guests, answer questions, direct guests to services, and relieve other volunteers if they need to take a break.

Qualifications: Interact with people in a friendly and understanding manner. Able to walk over uneven grassy areas.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift.

Wristband Monitor

Description: Check attendees for wristbands and cars for parking passes

Qualifications: Friendly. Able to stand for some periods and walk over uneven grassy areas.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift.

Late Check-in Monitor

Description: Check in members, distribute assigned wristbands, and check cars for parking passes.

Qualifications: Be calm under pressure.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift.

Raffle Booth Assistant

Description: Assist guests with buying raffle tickets, promote raffle items, answer questions, and sell memberships.

Qualifications: Interact with people in a friendly understanding manner. Able to walk over uneven grassy areas.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift.

Hagley Store Booth Assistant

Description: Bag purchases and monitor displays. Help move items as needed to stock display

Kids Central Activity Assistants:

Description: Assist families with games in an area reserved for kid-friendly games.

Hayride Volunteer positions include Craft Activity Assistant and Cider-Serving Assistant:

Craft Activity Assistant

Description: Help children with harvest-themed craft activities as they wait for the next hay ride.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy helping families with activities.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift for one Saturday or more in October.

Cider-Serving Assistant

Description: Greet visitors, explain the event, and invite them to try the activities available. Serve cider as needed.

Qualifications: Outgoing, friendly and ability to interact with guests.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift for one Saturday or more in October.

Invention Convention is a family friendly event that inspires kids to use their imagination, explore engineering, and experience science in a fun and real way. Invention Convention Volunteer positions include Greeter, Catering Assistant, Create an Invention Assistant, Gatekeeper, Hagley Store Table Assistant, Invention Convention Preparation Week Assistant, Membership Promotion Assistant, Patent Officer, Science Activity Room Assistant, Tinkering Room Assistant:

Greeter

Description: Greet guests and provide them with event program and information, answer questions.

Requirements: Time commitment of one fourhour shift for one day or more of event.

Catering Assistant

Description: Take orders, take money, give change, and help as needed to fill the food orders.

Qualifications: Able to stand for periods of time, make change, and be friendly and patient with people.

Requirements: Time commitment of one fourhour shift for one day or more of event.

Create an Invention Assistant

Description: Assist children with hands-on creation of inventions using household items, hand out building materials, restock supplies, assist families with the invention process, and clean the area as needed. Training will be provided.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy assisting families with activities. Able to stand for periods of time.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift for one or more days of the event.

Gatekeeper

Description: Redirect cars approaching the Visitor Center entrance to the Buck Road entrance if they are participating in the Invention Convention. Volunteers will be outside, with a gatehouse nearby.

Qualifications: Able to work outside, walk and stand for periods of time.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift for one day or more of the event.

Hagley Store Table Assistant

Description: Bag purchases and maintain displays.

Qualifications: Be helpful and friendly to visitors. Able to stand for periods of time.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift for one day or more of the event.

Invention Convention Preparation Week Assistant

Description: Assist with taking cords off appliances, help sort items, and prepare donations for the invention room. Assist with any other set up and preparation as needed.

Qualifications: Able to use wire cutters and lift twenty pounds. Able to stand for periods of time.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift for one or more days of the event.

Membership Promotion Assistant

Description: Promote and sell Hagley memberships to guests.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy interacting with guests.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift for one or more days of event.

Patent Officer

Description: Award patents for completed “inventions” by providing guests with patent “applications” for them to fill out and help stamp the patents. Restock supply of papers, pencils, crayons and gold stickers as needed.

Qualifications: Friendly, patient with children and families.

Requirements: Time requirement of one four-hour shift for one or more days of event.

Science Activity Room Assistant

Description: Assist children with hands-on science experiments and activities.

Qualifications: Outgoing, friendly and patient with children and families. Able to stand for periods of time. Training will be given; no science background needed.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift for one day or more of event.

Tinkering Room Assistant

Description: Assist families and children to select a donated item to take apart and help select the tools needed. Supervise activities.

Qualifications: Friendly and patient with families participating in activities. Able to stand for periods of time.

Nature Fest celebrates the tradition of E. I. du Pont’s love of nature by giving kids and adults opportunities to experience and learn about different parts of the natural world. Each year the focus rotates between earth, wind, water, and fire/light as the theme. Volunteer positions for Nature Fest (May) include Activity Sign-up Table Assistant, Activities Volunteer, Greeter, Garden/Greenhouse Volunteer, and Membership Assistant:

Activity Sign-up Table Assistant

Description: Sign up visitors for the nature walks and tree climbing, and provide information about the event and activities.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy interacting with guests.

Activity Volunteer

Description: Assisting staff with activities, demonstrations, and crafts for children and families.

Qualifications: Enjoy working with children and families to participate in activities, demonstrations and crafts. Training provided.

Greeter

Description: Greet guests and direct them to the different areas for activities, hand out programs, and assist admissions staff.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy interacting with guests.

Garden/Greenhouse Volunteer

Description: Assist staff in the E.I. Garden and Greenhouse with tours and activities for guests.

Qualifications: Enjoy gardening and assisting guests with activities.

Requirements: Time commitment of one four-hour shift.

Membership Assistant

Description: Help promote and sell Hagley Memberships.

Qualifications: Friendly, outgoing and enjoy interacting with guests.

Science Saturdays inspire families to creatively solve science based challenges:

Science Saturday Family Program Volunteer

Description: Under the direction of the Museum Educator, facilitate the Science Saturday program with family visitors. This involves hands-on interactions with diverse, multigenerational groups of people.

Qualifications: Good communication and public speaking skills, enjoy working with families on crafts and activities to teach principles of science.

Requirements: Time commitment of one training session and then one or more four-hour shift on the fourth Saturday of the month from January to November. You'll be standing, bending, occasionally pushing a cart and walking for short distances.

Victorine’s Valentine’s Day celebrates the holiday with card making, hot chocolate bar, and other fun activities:

Victorine’s Valentine’s Day Activities Assistant

Description: Demonstrate Valentine’s Day-themed baking to assist families and children with Valentine’s Day activities and crafts.
