The Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society organizes scholarly conferences, research seminars, and administers research grants for the Hagley Library. With its focus on advanced study, the Center fosters a community of scholars that includes Hagley staff, faculty and graduate students, museum professionals, research fellows and associates, and visiting scholars from around the world. Its efforts are designed to bring attention to Hagley's research collections and to generate intellectual dialogue at Hagley.
The Center offers grants that cover costs associated with traveling to use Hagley's research collections. Application deadlines are March 31, June 30, and October 31, and between twenty-five and thirty grants are awarded each year. The Center also awards one-semester dissertation fellowships, with a November 15 application deadline, for graduate students whose research includes Hagley's collections.
The Business History Conference (BHC), the nation's largest professional organization of business historians, is based at the Center, as is the editorial office of its journal, Enterprise & Society: The International Journal of Business History. The Hagley Museum & Library and the Business History Conference offer an annual prize for the best book in business history, called the Hagley Prize.
