The chill in the air this morning leaves no doubt that winter is on its way. We're reflecting today on winters past and future today with this ice-covered tree in the old steer field at Longwood Gardens, photographed in 1922.
Today, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania is a publicly accessible botanical garden covering 1,077 acres. But at the time this photograph was taken, it was the home of Pierre S. DuPont (1870-1954), who purchased the property from the Pierce family in 1906, and opened it to the public in 1921.
This photographic print is part of the Hagley Library's P.S. du Pont Longwood photograph collection (Accession 1969.002). You can view more items from this collection online now by visiting its page in our Digital Archive.
