Horticulturist I

Job Purpose: 

In consultation with the Director, Gardens and Horticulture, the candidate is responsible for the primary care of the Workers’ Garden. This position also works in the Crowninshield Ruin Garden and the E.I. du Pont Garden. Responsible for other specialized horticultural tasks throughout the Hagley property as assigned.

 

Specific Duties:

• Care of all plants in the Workers Garden area including scheduling, planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing and pest management.

• Update the annual crop-list with propagation, historic and scheduling details. 

• Perform specialized horticultural tasks including plant propagation.

• Occasionally assigned weekend duty in the greenhouse to provide basic care for plants.

• Train and oversee volunteers assigned in areas.

• Oversee the development and maintenance of the Workers Garden. Including interpretation and programming (coordinating with Hagley’s Education team). 

• Assist with maintenance and design in the Crowninshield Ruin Garden. 

• Assist with the care and maintenance of the E.I. du Pont Garden. 

• Assist with the maintenance and care of the shared space in the Greenhouse building, Barn and offices.

• Other duties as assigned by Director, Gardens and Horticulture. Including group projects, snow removal, and weekend duty for Fireworks, and Craft Fair or Car Show.

• Supports Special Events Manager in hosting open houses, meet-ups, and other initiatives to promote site rental among wedding and event industry professionals and directly to potential clients

 

Minimum Experience and Required Skills:

BA/BS degree in the field of horticulture or closely related discipline required.  Experience in vegetable cultivation, propagation, horticulture, and native plants preferred.  Knowledge of plant propagation, pruning, plant physiology, and soil science. Delaware commercial pesticide applicator's license is encouraged but not required. Valid driver's license required.

Ability to communicate knowledge orally and in written form. Excellent time-management skills to handle a variety of assignments simultaneously under a variety of deadlines and other constraints. Ability to understand and interpret instruction to work effectively and efficiently independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team. Ability to interact in an appropriate and professional manner with the public, staff and volunteers. 

 

Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk, sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision and depth perception

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to the elements such as heat, cold, rain and sun. This position is performed outdoors, indoors, Greenhouse and office settings.

 

Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 3:00pm (35 hours per week) 

 

Compensation:

Non-exempt, $20.00 - $23.50 per hour.
