Still dawdling over those W-2s?

A booklet cover showcasing various government buildings, titled "THE STORY OF TAXES"

Still dawdling over those W-2s? Need a reminder to dig up those 1099s? Tuesday's tax deadline is the inspiration for this week's Hagley Vault post.

Published by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in 1957, The Story of Taxes provided a brief, business-friendly overview of the history of taxation worldwide, along with the current state of (and proposals for) taxation in the United States. The pamphlet was part of the company's "This is Du Pont" series which were published by between 1949 and 1970 for distribution to shareholders and other interested members of the public. Released on an annual basis, these issues often republished material from one year to the next, adding new content as needed.

Most of the pamphlets provided broad overviews of the company's general operations. Other issues, frequently but not always published on a twice-yearly schedule, addressed thematic issues like industrial research, corporate profits, free trade and enterprise, the environment, and the roles of the consumer and large corporations in a capitalist society. These issues were also subject to reprinting and redistribution, but do not appear to have been substantially altered or edited from one printing to the next.

This publication series is call number f HD9651.9.D94 A5 in Hagley Library's Published Collections and has been digitized for easy access. Click here to view them in our Digital Archives!
