Job Purpose:
In consultation with the Director, Gardens and Horticulture, the candidate is responsible primarily for the care of all plants in the E. I. du Pont Restored Garden. Maintain the vegetable garden, rose garden, orchard, and surrounding area in exhibit condition including responsibility for labeling plants and preparing appropriate records on the plantings. Complete research for planning and design of historical gardens. Responsible for other horticultural tasks throughout the Hagley property as assigned.
Specific Duties:
• Daily maintenance of E. I. du Pont Restored Garden area including scheduling, planting, weeding, watering, pruning, raking, mowing, etc.
• Prepare annual records on all bulbs, perennials, annuals, vegetables, and fruit trees in E. I. du Pont Restored Garden.
• Perform specialized horticultural tasks including plant propagation and espalier training of fruit trees and maintenance of nursery as required.
• Occasionally assigned weekend duty in the greenhouse to provide basic care for plants.
• Train volunteers assigned to assist in the E. I. Garden.
• Other duties as assigned by Director, Gardens and Horticulture. Including snow removal and support for other departments including events and programming.
Minimum Experience and Required Skills:
BA/BS degree in the field of horticulture or closely related discipline required. Experience in vegetable cultivation, pomology and espaliered treatment of fruit trees. Knowledge of plant propagation, pruning, plant physiology, and soil science. Valid driver's license required.
Ability to communicate knowledge orally and in written form. Excellent time-management skills to handle a variety of assignments simultaneously under a variety of deadlines and other constraints. Ability to understand and interpret instruction to work effectively and efficiently independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team. Ability to interact in an appropriate and professional manner with the public, staff and volunteers.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk, sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision and depth perception
Schedule:
This is a full-time position at thirty-five (35) hours per week. The normal schedule is Monday-Friday, 7am – 3pm.
Compensation:
$42,000 - $46,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
