Hagley Museum and Library curator, Kevin Martin, will introduce a series of films sponsored by the Hercules Powder Company at the Screening Room @ 1313 in Wilmington, Delaware on January 23, 2025 at 7pm.
Hercules Land (1943 | 10 minutes) - Produced to introduce new employees to the company, this orientation film provided an overview of how "Hercules Land" manufactured a variety of consumer goods, including cellulose products, terpene and rosin chemicals, synthetics, paper makers' chemicals, chemical cotton, and explosives.
Our Part of the Job (1942 | 18 minutes) - Two fictional house painters using Hercules Steam-Distilled Wood Turpentine visit a paint store while discussing the superior qualities of Hercules-branded turpentine. An entertaining and innovative depiction that includes a film about the making of turpentine creatively woven into the main narrative.
Linter Logic (1946 | 20 minutes) - The Ogletree family, fictitious owners of a cottonseed mill, discuss the changes over the years of their multi-generational business. Actors playing Ogletree family members describe the use of linters, formerly a waste product in their manufacturing process, in the making of cellulose for a variety of industrial and consumer products.
The three Hercules films were produced by Cinecraft Productions of Cleveland, Ohio. Hagley acquired the Cinecraft collection in 2019. At the conclusion of the films, Martin will moderate a Q&A with Jim Culley, whose father, Ray Culley Sr., produced the films for the Hercules Powder Company in the early 1940s.
