Alpo’s cat food brand survived a contentious design process and upon its 1989 release (with the help of the cartoon cat Garfield) quickly became a profitable cat food line.
However, when Nestlé purchased Alpo in 1995, Nestlé executives saw much more value in Friskies, the company’s other, more established cat food brand, and stopped promoting Alpo cat food. Alpo's successful dog food line continues to this day, but Nestlé discontinued Alpo cat food altogether in the mid-2000s.
